With continuously growing demands for high reliability and availability of systems, the topics fault diagnosis, process monitoring and fault-tolerant systems gain more and more importance in research and industry. As an internationally leading team, the institute AKS has significantly contributed to the development of model-based fault-diagnosis technologies. The current research focuses of the AKS include:

Fault-tolerant engine management systems

Observer design, fault diagnosis, especially On-Board Diagnosis (OBD), and performance monitoring for engine management systems have become of great interest during last years. The R&D activities in this area are characterized by a close cooperation between IAV GmbH and AKS. The overall goal is the development of new, cost efficient methods for the use in modern engine control units and for the application tools used in the design stage of new vehicles.

Fault-tolerant embedded and networked control systems

The objective of this research activity is to develop new methods to analyze and design observer-based fault tolerant monitoring and supervision systems for wireless networked control systems. In a close cooperation of communication group (NTS University of Duisburg-Essen), the network performance (QoS) and communication strategies will be deeply investigated, and integrated in the system design to optimize the overall system performance.
